eLife Latest: Welcoming our newest editors

Bringing a broad range of expertise, 113 researchers join eLife’s editorial board as 12 Reviewing Editors move to the leadership team.

Since last April, 113 scientists joined our Board of Reviewing Editors (BRE), while 12 editors moved to senior roles on the eLife leadership team. The new editors work across all major areas of research considered for publication at eLife.

Reviewing Editors who have recently joined the Senior Editors team include:

Edward E. Morrisey is the Robinette Professor of Medicine and a Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Pennsylvania (US). The overall goals of his lab is to better understand how the lung responds to injury, and use this knowledge to identify ways to promote repair and regeneration of the respiratory system. Morrisey is a Senior Editor for Developmental Biology and Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine.

Dominique Soldati-Favre is professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Geneva (Switzerland). Her laboratory is studying obligate intracellular parasitism. Soldati-Favre is a Senior Editor for Microbiology and Infectious Disease.

Aleksandra M. Walczak is a CNRS researcher at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris (France), interested in a variety of problems in the physics of living systems. She actively works on development, collective behaviour of bird flocks and statistical descriptions of the immune system. Walczak is a Senior Editor in the areas of Computational and Systems Biology and Physics of Living Systems.

Kenton J. Swartz is a Senior Investigator in the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke within the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland (US). His laboratory uses a combination of techniques to understand how ion channel proteins sense critical biological stimuli. Swartz is a Senior Editor for Structural Biology and Molecular Biophysics and Neuroscience.

Maureen Murphy is an expert in the role of the p53 gene in cancer. She’s a Professor and Program Leader in the Molecular and Cellular Oncogenesis Program of The Wistar Institute (US) and an adjunct professor at Drexel University College of Medicine and The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (US). Murphy is a Senior Editor for Cancer Biology.

Christian Rutz is Professor of Biology at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, where he heads a research group studying animal tool behaviour. He also serves as Founding President of the International Bio-Logging Society and contributes to efforts to extend the scope of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS). Rutz is a Senior Editor for Ecology.

Clifford J. Rosen is a Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and Principal Investigator for the Rosen Musculoskeletal Laboratory at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute (US). He is a board-certified endocrinologist. In the last ten years the Rosen laboratory has been studying mesenchymal stem cell fate. Rosen is a Senior Editor for Human Biology and Medicine.

Richard M. White is a physician-scientist at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Weill Cornell Medical College (US). He is interested in basic mechanisms underlying metastasis. White is Senior Editor for Cancer Biology and Developmental Biology.

Suzanne R. Pfeffer is the Emma Pfeiffer Merner Professor of Medical Sciences and Professor of Biochemistry at Stanford University School of Medicine (US). She is an expert in the field of membrane trafficking in the secretory and endocytic pathways. Pfeffer is a Senior Editor for Cell Biology.

Kathryn S. Cheah is a developmental geneticist and Jimmy and Emily Tang Professor in Molecular Genetics and Chair Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Hong Kong. Her research focuses on using functional genomics and mouse models to understand gene function and regulation, the associated gene regulatory networks and mechanisms of disease. Cheah is a Senior Editor in the areas of Developmental Biology and Genetics and Genomics.

Floris De Lange is a Professor at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands and Principal Investigator of the Predictive Brain Lab at the Donders Institute, where he studies how various forms of prior knowledge modify perception and decision-making, both in health and disease. De Lange is a Senior Editor for Neuroscience.

Kate Wassum is an Associate Professor of Behavioral Neuroscience in the Psychology Department at the University of California, Los Angeles (US). Her research focuses on the neural signals and circuits underlying appetitive associative learning, motivated behavior and decision making. Wassum is a Senior Editor for Neuroscience.

Our Senior Editors are responsible for maintaining the high quality and broad scope of the work published in the journal. They decide, in consultation with members of the Board of Reviewing Editors (BRE), whether a paper should be sent for peer review. All manuscripts selected for review are then assigned to an appropriate BRE who recruits reviewers and oversees the online consultation among referees.

It is incredibly useful, and not common in my experience, to have the reviewers reach a consensus before writing a response letter to the authors. It improves the peer-review experience for both authors and reviewers by minimising confusion and accelerating the process. – Daniela Robles-Espinoza
